If I were to have run THAT business decision by any MBA or business expert, he would have recommended against it since the Sunnyvale office wasn't running 3 full days yet, and I barely knew what I was doing from a practice management perspective.

But I had three things:

  • Very good patients who would come to see me in Sunnyvale from Morgan Hill.
  • A gut feeling that there was a need for a pediatric dentist in Morgan Hill.
  • An excellent and loyal receptionist who had become my "right-hand man". She worked tirelessly to help me start the second practice

I left the general dentistry practice to open my own practice in Sunnyvale.

Actually, I was asked to resign because I was opening up my own practice (35 miles away).

It was the best thing that's happened to me so far…

I was working one day a week in Sunnyvale.

This is how our schedule looked that day

This is what our schedule looks like now

Dr. Metwally began his residency at Staten Island University Hospital in NY.

I drove cross country and toyed with the idea of opening up my practice right away.

I started working for a general dentist in Morgan Hill (I didn't have the guts to open right away).

As time went by, it becomes evident that he and I had different ideas regarding how to run a practice.

I began my residency in pediatric dentistry at the Children's Hospital in Buffalo, NY

Dr. Cindy graduated from dental school at UCSF.

Dr. Cindy began her residency at UCSF.

When I got back to my home base, I met and began to shadow a GREAT pediatric dentist, Molly Lanz, DDS.

This is when I realized what pediatric dentistry really is.

I graduated from NYU dental school and moved to Germany to treat adults as a US Army Dentist.

I deployed to Iraq, and while there, I treated many Iraqi kids as part of a civil affairs outreach program. Treating children starts to grow on me.

It was my last year in dental school, and I was still convinced that pediatric dentistry was "adult dentistry in smaller mouths that move more." I was definitely NOT going to be a pediatric dentist.

Dr. Metwally graduated from Dental School at UCSF.

In the summer, I was sitting in my parent's home in San Jose with Ayman Metwally. I had just finished my first year of dental school, and he his second. I remember him telling me he was thinking of Pediatric Dentistry.

I also clearly remember my telling him he was crazy.
